Starting your own business - Things and ways to consider

By: Robb Stark

Starting your own business, leaving the world of employment behind, is always a big step, as well as an important one. For some, starting your own business is accompanied by feelings of unfamiliarity and pressure, while others feel it is exiting and extremely fun.

Which ever way you feel about your decision, it is always important to give the whole thing a lot of thought before you go ahead. You also have to read through all the rules and regulations that are included in starting you own company to make sure you do not put more at stake than you have to. It may be things such as bank financing loans (if you should need them), pension, employment regulations or an everyday thing as how you file your tax returns. You do not have to know everything by hart buy you need at least a general idea to grasp the full picture of it all.

There are many options to choose from when starting your own business; common among all of them is that it will demand a lot of your time and energy.

If you have figured out your own business idea in a field in which you are quite interested you should of course put your energy to it. As usual it is extremely important that you do your homework beforehand so that you come well prepared. Getting your own, small business up and running smoothly as well as profitably takes longer than most people anticipate. Knowledge is, as usual, key here. Knowledge about running a business, rules and regulations and general, wide knowledge about your specific business niche is obviously quite important. The more you learn beforehand, the less likely you are to run bankrupt or face other problems.

If you do not have your own business idea, franchising may be a fun and viable option. Working with franchising differs a lot from starting up your own company from scratch, in a positive way as well as in a negative one. The guidelines for you as a franchiser are usually very clear and simple, you will have to follow them, but on the other hand you will most certainly receive a lot of help. A few things to consider before starting a franchising business are start-up costs, operating costs as well as the running commissions. A start-up fee is usually mandatory when starting a franchise. Consider this cost as well as what is included; will there be more hidden fees in the near future? Also obviously important is that you and the franchise make it through the first period financially until the business becomes profitable; how much will it cost and are you able to afford it? How large are the running commissions back to the franchisor going to be, what is included and is the amount or percentage reasonable?

Books and the Internet as a source for information will get you a long way. Personal experience and know-how will always help you get further though. Talk to people who have started their own businesses already, what advice can they give you from experience? This will help you avoid many classic pitfalls and unnecessary risks.
